Sure, websites can say 'javascript required' and block you out as things are today, but it's a conscious opt-in decision they have to make, the vast majority of pages today will work without running any custom code, and it's generally expected that they will do so. Making the rendering/layout engine controlled by the site and mostly opaque to the browser and extensions seems like it's a bad idea for security, privacy, and accessibility.

I'm all for removing javascript as a middleman between HTML and wasm, but I really hope HTML itself is here to stay, or at least something like it.

Wasm+canvas sites are uncommon enough today that I don't run into any in day to day life, but if this becomes common practice it's going to make the web significantly worse in my opinion. Plus, HTML and JS are separated for a reason, being able to disable all scripts for a website and still have the core functionality is great for both usability and security, and combining both into wasm seems like it would take away that option. This seems like it'd kill adblock and dark reader entirely (or force them to handle each rendering engine separately at the very least). Please don't let this become the new standard.
